How TikTok monetisation works
There’s a diverse range of content and audiences online, but if you want to make money, you must identify your niche and stay up to date on popular topics that people are interested in.
One of the many ways people earn money these days is content creation, and TikTok is one of the apps creators use frequently.
It has been a hit ever since it first gained popularity in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people quarantined and spent time on social media, most users expanded their accounts, and the app has remained popular ever since.
There’s a diverse range of content and audiences online, but if you want to make money, you must identify your niche and stay up to date on popular topics that people are interested in. You can do this by using creator search insights, which provide context on why a particular topic is being searched and the preferred content format. Content producers can then use this information to create their content and monitor the performance of their posts on each search result.
Posting original videos that are at least one minute long and adhering to TikTok’s community guidelines, terms of service, and copyright policy could make you eligible for prizes through the Creator Fund Program. The videos should have 100,000 views in the previous 30 days and at least 10,000 followers. Payouts should be between $0.40 (KSh51.84) and $1.00 (KSh129.60). Additionally, during a live stream, viewers can buy virtual presents with virtual coins, which can subsequently be exchanged for real money in the form of diamonds. The amount of money the creator receives during the live stream depends on the audience’s engagement.
By transforming ordinary videos into instant stores where influence meets real-time commerce, TikTok Shop has completely changed the way creators make money. Influencers are compensated for promoting the product via TikTok Live videos in exchange for a commission. TikTok can track sales and pay commissions instantly, without requiring users to leave the app, because customers purchase directly in the app.
Influencers then only get paid a portion of the money they generate if the product is bought. Sellers set commission rates, which often range from 10% to 50%, depending on the product category and the terms of the influencer’s agreement. Advertising accounts for 77% of TikTok’s revenue. Influencers can ask brands for free samples of certain products, but businesses will still need to pay them after the products are delivered. To increase sales, they can also implement initiatives such as offering discounts to customers who purchase goods totalling a specific amount.
With the launch of Ads in 2024, TikTok improved its e-commerce ecosystem by providing companies with a strong new means of increasing visibility and generating targeted sales on a scale. Businesses can create targeted campaigns that reach specific demographics and this increases their likelihood of sales. Unlike the previous TikTok Creator Fund, which paid solely on views and creativity, TikTok Shop pays based on conversion (sales). It is designed to reward content that directly drives commerce, making it a powerful tool for creators who can produce high-converting, “shoppable” content.
Because AI integration has a recommendation algorithm that tailors content depending on user interactions and community involvement, it was also one of the best features to add. In addition to analysing audio tracks in videos, this tool recommends popular content and encourages participation in viral challenges. To boost their chances of being suggested by TikTok’s algorithm, creators also use this function to respond to viewers directly in their films, giving genuine, quick responses that don’t seem staged.
Last but not least, TikTok offers a subscription model that lets users pay a monthly fee for access to exclusive content. Depending on the creator’s location, TikTok may give them up to 90% of its revenue.
The next big break on TikTok is always just a scroll away, regardless of whether you’re following trends, doing magic, or making money from sales.
