What influences spending habits over the weekend
Hobbies and interests, such as sports, hiking, music, painting or socialising, are some of the common ways people spend their money.
For many people, weekends give great insights into how they spend money and what influences their decisions. Weekend spending and budgets are mainly influenced by personality, habits and values.
Hobbies and interests, such as sports, hiking, music, painting or socialising, are some of the common ways people spend their money.
James Kamau, an avid football fan, spends his weekend buying drinks at the local pub, where he enjoys the matches and the social banter from fellow fans.
“On average I spend KSh1,300 on drinks over the weekend, and if I factor in a cab or fuelling the car, it can total KSh 3,500,” he explained
Each season, he digs deeper into his budget to buy football jerseys of his favourite teams so he can enjoy the game, donning the team colours. An original football jersey can cost up to KSh2,800.
He also enjoys playing football at a turf pitch, watching highlights of previous games and going to the gym.
James’ close friend Kevin Koech makes his decisions over the weekend based on instincts.
“My weekend starts on Friday, and by 5 pm, I start calling my friends to find out where they are having fun,” he states.
As the life of the party, he makes sure everyone has a steady supply of drinks. While others might be at the gym or spending time with their family, Kevin’s Sunday is usually for recovering from the weekend festivities.
While Keving enjoys a good party, first-time parents Mike and Stacy Murigi keep their weekends busy with family activities.
“Every month, we set aside KSh5,000 to take our child out for lunch, shopping, or the movies, and at times we stay home and opt to buy snacks and have a movie night,” Stacy says
Their spending reflects a commitment to their family values rather than their individual interests.
For Darshen Omondi, the weekend is all about his personal space. He likes watching movies, meditating, reading novels and playing his guitar. Since he values quiet time, the weekend is spent more scrolling online for guitar products or just reading his favourite novel on a Sunday afternoon.
“I don’t go out on weekends, as long as I have enough bundles and a good book, I can spend the two days in my own company, strumming my guitar,” he notes.
These four demonstrate that a weekend spent in Nairobi is shaped by lifestyles, values, and demands that influence how they spend their time and money.
